Zapp is an American funk band formed in Dayton, Ohio, in the late 1970s around Roger Troutman and his brothers. The group became known for synthesizer-driven funk and Roger Troutman’s use of the talk box on songs including “More Bounce to the Ounce,” “Dance Floor,” “Computer Love” and “I Can Make You Dance.” In 2018, Zapp performed a Tiny Desk concert for NPR Music, presenting its repertoire with a full band and prominent talk-box vocals. The group continues to tour under the leadership of Lester Troutman, keeping the songs and sound associated with Roger Troutman at the center of its shows.
The Sugarhill Gang is an American hip-hop group formed in 1979 in Englewood, New Jersey, with an original lineup of Wonder Mike, Big Bank Hank and Master Gee. Sylvia Robinson assembled the trio for Sugar Hill Records, and “Rapper’s Delight” brought recorded rap to a broad pop audience. Their early catalogue also includes “8th Wonder” and “Apache (Jump on It).” In 2019, The Sugarhill Gang marked the 40th anniversary of “Rapper’s Delight” through live appearances that included Glastonbury Festival, performing there with Grandmaster Melle Mel and Scorpio. In 2023, they took part in Hip Hop 50 Live at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.
