Avishai Cohen Trio in Antwerp

Avishai Cohen Trio is a contemporary-jazz group led by Israeli bassist, composer and vocalist Avishai Cohen. Born in Kabri in 1970, Avishai Cohen played in Chick Corea’s Origin and New Trio before establishing his own ensembles. The trio’s central recordings include Gently Disturbed, From Darkness and Shifting Sands, while compositions such as “Remembering” and “Seven Seas” became recurring parts of his repertoire. In 2007, As Is... Live at the Blue Note documented the group in New York. The Gently Disturbed lineup, featuring pianist Shai Maestro and drummer Mark Guiliana, later performed at Jazz in Marciac. Subsequent trios featuring Nitai Hershkovits and Daniel Dor, and later Elchin Shirinov and Roni Kaspi, toured the repertoire of From Darkness and Shifting Sands. The concert format centres on double bass, piano and drums, giving each player room for improvisation inside Avishai Cohen’s written themes. Avishai Cohen also sings selected pieces during trio performances. The group has performed at the London jazz club Ronnie Scott’s and at the Olympia music hall in Paris.
