About Goanna

Goanna is an Australian rock band formed in Geelong in 1977 by singer-songwriter Shane Howard. Its folk-rooted rock became widely known through the debut album Spirit of Place and the songs “Solid Rock” and “Razor’s Edge”; “Solid Rock” directly addresses the dispossession of Aboriginal Australians.

Goanna toured nationally through pubs and concert venues after Spirit of Place was released in the early 1980s. In 2022, the group reunited for the Spirit of Place 40th Anniversary Tour, a national theatre tour centred on the debut album.
