High On Fire are an American metal trio formed in Oakland in 1998 by guitarist and vocalist Matt Pike after Sleep disbanded. Their heavy, riff-driven sound draws on stoner, sludge and doom metal, and their best-known records include Blessed Black Wings, Death Is This Communion and Snakes for the Divine. The title track from Electric Messiah won the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. The 2005 concert album Live from the Relapse Contamination Festival documents a High On Fire set recorded at the Trocadero Theatre in Philadelphia. The recording captures the power-trio format that has remained central to their club, theatre and festival performances. High On Fire have carried that format well beyond Oakland, performing at Roadburn in Tilburg and Hellfest in Clisson.
Old Man Gloom is an American experimental metal band formed in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1999 by Aaron Turner and Santos Montano. The group’s best-known lineup also included Nate Newton and Caleb Scofield, connecting it to Isis, Converge and Cave In. Its dense mix of sludge, doom, post-metal and noise runs through albums including Seminar II, Seminar III: Zozobra, Christmas, No and The Ape of God. Old Man Gloom played Roadburn Festival in Tilburg in 2014, part of the band’s relatively infrequent European live history. Four years later, the band performed at the Royale in Boston during a memorial benefit for Caleb Scofield.
