About Joe Bataan
Joe Bataan is an American singer, pianist and bandleader from East Harlem whose music encompasses Latin soul, boogaloo, salsa and funk. He became known through his Fania recordings, including “Gypsy Woman” and “Subway Joe,” and later explored disco on the album Salsoul and early rap on “Rap-O Clap-O.”
The concert album Live from San Frantasia documents Joe Bataan leading a band through the Latin-soul repertoire he had built since his Fania recordings. Singing and playing piano over percussion, horns and a rhythm section, he preserved that established concert format onstage in San Francisco.
