About John McLaughlin
John McLaughlin is an English guitarist and composer, born in 1942, whose work helped establish jazz fusion. After recording with Miles Davis on In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew, he founded Mahavishnu Orchestra, known for albums including The Inner Mounting Flame and Birds of Fire. He later formed Shakti with Zakir Hussain and L. Shankar, bringing jazz improvisation into sustained dialogue with Indian classical music.
Mahavishnu Orchestra recorded the live album Between Nothingness & Eternity at New York’s Central Park in 1973. In 2017, John McLaughlin toured the United States with Jimmy Herring on Meeting of the Spirits; sets by Jimmy Herring and the Invisible Whip and The 4th Dimension led to a joint performance of Mahavishnu Orchestra material.
His festival appearances included the Montreux Jazz Festival and Eric Clapton’s inaugural Crossroads Guitar Festival in 2004.
