Artists
Metric is a Canadian indie-rock band formed in Toronto in 1998, fronted by singer and keyboardist Emily Haines alongside guitarist James Shaw, bassist Joshua Winstead and drummer Joules Scott-Key. Electronic textures and new-wave rhythms run through albums including Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?, Live It Out and Fantasies; the band’s best-known songs include “Combat Baby,” “Help I’m Alive,” “Gimme Sympathy” and “Black Sheep.” A 2006 performance at Montreal’s Métropolis became the concert film Live at Metropolis. After Fantasies, Metric toured internationally and opened North American arena dates for Muse in 2010, while the Synthetica album cycle brought further theatre and festival shows. The band co-headlined the Lights on the Horizon tour with Death Cab for Cutie in 2016 and returned to theatres on the Doomscroller Tour in 2022.
Broken Social Scene is a Canadian indie-rock collective formed in Toronto in 1999 by Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning. The group became known for the albums You Forgot It in People and Broken Social Scene, and for songs including “Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl,” “Cause = Time” and “7/4 (Shoreline).” In 2009, Broken Social Scene played a free show at Harbourfront Centre in Toronto; footage from the concert became central to Bruce McDonald’s film This Movie Is Broken. The band toured behind Hug of Thunder in 2017 and later presented You Forgot It in People in full during its 20th-anniversary tour. The live band is an expanded ensemble with several singers and multi-instrumentalists, and its personnel can change between tours. Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning anchor performances drawn from the collective’s catalogue. Broken Social Scene has repeatedly performed in New York and Los Angeles. The band also returns to Seattle and Portland on North American tours.
