Steam Down is a British jazz collective formed in London in 2017 by saxophonist and composer Ahnansé. Its improvisation-led music draws on funk, soul and African and Caribbean rhythms; key recordings include “Free My Skin,” the EP Five Fruit and a version of Wayne Shorter’s “Etcetera” for Blue Note Re:imagined. In 2017, Steam Down established a weekly Wednesday session at Buster Mantis in Deptford, where a changing ensemble of musicians developed material through collective improvisation. The group later carried that format onto larger stages: Glastonbury Festival and WOMAD booked Steam Down, and the collective also performed at We Out Here.
