About The HillBenders

The HillBenders are an American progressive-bluegrass quintet formed in 2008 in Springfield, Missouri. They are best known for Tommy: A Bluegrass Opry, an acoustic string-band arrangement of The Who’s rock opera Tommy.

The HillBenders won the Telluride Bluegrass Festival band competition in 2009. In 2015, they presented Tommy: A Bluegrass Opry at South by Southwest in Austin, then took the production to theatres and festivals.

The group performs with guitar, banjo, mandolin, upright bass and Dobro, and several members sing. That five-piece lineup plays the complete song cycle of The Who’s Tommy.
