About Zeal & Ardor
Zeal & Ardor is an experimental metal project founded in Basel in 2013 by Swiss-American musician Manuel Gagneux. Its music draws on black metal, African American spirituals, blues and soul. The project is known for the albums Devil Is Fine, Stranger Fruit and Zeal & Ardor, as well as songs including “Devil Is Fine” and “Gravedigger’s Chant.”
The first touring lineup made its stage debut at Roadburn Festival in Tilburg in 2017. In 2018, the band played Download Festival and Hellfest; its December performance at the Electric Ballroom was released in 2019 as the concert album Live in London.
The concert lineup performs as a six-piece band built around guitars, bass, drums and a three-vocalist front line. Its call-and-response arrangements place Manuel Gagneux’s lead beside the answering voices of Marc Obrist and Denis Wagner.
