About Black Uhuru
Black Uhuru is a Jamaican roots-reggae group formed in Kingston in 1972 and led by founding member Derrick “Duckie” Simpson. The group became known through the vocal lineup of Simpson, Michael Rose and Puma Jones, recordings driven by Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare, and songs including “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” “Shine Eye Gal” and “Sinsemilla.” The album Anthem won the inaugural Grammy Award for Best Reggae Recording.
A 1981 concert at London’s Rainbow Theatre was released as Tear It Up – Live, capturing the group backed by drummer Sly Dunbar and bassist Robbie Shakespeare. Black Uhuru then opened European stadium shows for the Rolling Stones in 1982. They later performed at Reggae Sunsplash in Jamaica.
