About The Headhunters
The Headhunters are an American jazz-funk group formed in 1973 by keyboardist Herbie Hancock. They play electric jazz and funk shaped by African and Afro-Caribbean percussion, first heard on Hancock’s album Head Hunters in tracks including “Chameleon” and a reworked “Watermelon Man.” Recording under their own name, they released Survival of the Fittest, featuring “God Make Me Funky.”
The 1970s lineup toured as Hancock’s concert band, and its Japanese performances were documented on the live album Flood, recorded at Shibuya Public Hall in Tokyo in 1975. The 1998 reunion album Return of the Headhunters! brought several core musicians back together, and subsequent touring lineups included Bill Summers and Mike Clark.
