Esa-Pekka Salonen is a Finnish conductor and composer, born in Helsinki in 1958. He is closely associated with twentieth-century and contemporary orchestral music, while his own works include LA Variations, the Violin Concerto and the Cello Concerto.

In 1983, Salonen made his breakthrough as a conductor when he stepped in to lead the Philharmonia Orchestra in Mahler’s Third Symphony. He served as music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic between 1992 and 2009 and led the orchestra during the 2003 inauguration of Walt Disney Concert Hall. He later returned to the Philharmonia as principal conductor and artistic adviser, then became music director of the San Francisco Symphony in 2020.
